      Clean power, clean water, sustainable farming – Voltares Africa

      Voltares Africa launches in Senegal, bringing affordable clean energy solutions to communities, farmers and the C&I sector      

      Sub-Saharan Africa, while rich in natural resources, remains one of the poorest regions in the world and is beset with food insecurity.1 This can be largely attributed to its underperforming agricultural sector, which contributes to almost a quarter of its total GDP.2 The absence of modern infrastructure imposes significant expenses on farmers, who are often left with no other choice but to use diesel generators to power their water pumps, resulting in costly fuel expenditures.

      Although renewable energy alternatives, such as solar pumps, are available, the substantial initial investment required makes them unaffordable for many farmers. With the aim of addressing this problem, Voltares Africa was founded to support farmers in kickstarting their agricultural endeavours. In a significant first step, Voltares Africa plans to provide 25 solar pump systems that would facilitate irrigation across a surface area of 350 hectares to small-scale farmers.

      "Our objective is to enable these farmers to utilize their financial resources to cultivate their initial crops. Therefore, we have decided to offer them a grace period for their first instalment payment, allowing them to make the payment only after they have earned their first revenue," explained Cornelius Patt, CEO of Voltares.

       

      Based on a brief feasibility study conducted on the business model of banana farms, it has been determined that farmers can recoup the entire cost of the system within a four-year period, with bi-weekly harvesting following their first crop, which is typically harvested after nine months.

      Affordable and eco-friendly irrigation solutions can bring about significant positive impacts. Solar pumping systems have the potential to convert unutilized land into productive farmlands or enhance the productivity of existing crops. By facilitating access to water in regions lacking necessary infrastructure, these solutions help improve food security and generate substantial income for farmers and communities globally.

      Voltares Africa is now aiming to raise additional funds to scale up its support for farmers in Senegal. We are committed to empowering farmers with affordable and green energy solutions that will help drive sustainable growth in the agricultural sector. The impact of such initiatives can be far-reaching, providing livelihoods for local communities, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to the global fight against climate change.
