During the panel discussion, a spontaneous agreement was reached in favour of renewable energy projects in Sierra Leone

Without access to sustainable and affordable energy, it is not possible to achieve food security and build resilient food systems. During a panel discussion at the UNIDO International Vienna Energy & Climate Forum (IVCEF), Kandeh YUMKELLA, former Director General of UNIDO and Chair of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy & Food Security, invited Voltares to invest in Sierra Leone.

Dr Yumkella proposed to invest in Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) projects in Sierra Leone to power agriculture and industry in off-grid communities. Cornelius Patt, founder of Voltares, took up the challenge and committed to increasing his investment in the agricultural value chain through Voltares Africa, a joint venture with Off-Grid Europe and Africa Emergence Group (AEG) in Senegal.

Voltares Africa is currently financing the use of solar water pumps to increase food production and solar cold storage to prevent post-harvest losses in Senegal. Voltares Africa intends to expand the project to other countries in West Africa.
