On the occasion of the International Vienna Energy & Climate Conference, Voltares Africa signed a contract with Africa Emergence Group (AEG) for the construction of a solar-powered cold store in Senegal. The innovative design of the cold store (storage capacity of 500 t) comes from the joint venture partner of Voltares Africa, Off-Grid Europe, which is also responsible for the implementation.
The financing comes from Voltares in Vienna and the Austrian Development Bank OeEB. Voltares Africa's strategy is to finance projects for the productive use of renewable energy (PURE) with a co-purchase model. Insufficient crop cooling in Africa causes periodic spikes in food prices, crop spoilage, and harvest losses, primarily due to inadequate storage facilities and energy constraints, particularly affecting smallholder farmers.
By harnessing solar energy and providing a 100 % off-grid solution, a consistent and energy-efficient cooling process, reducing post-harvest losses and crop spoilage, can be ensured. This not only contributes to improved nutrition security but also helps stabilize food prices, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of food in the region.
